Mrs. Mercy Torkwase Iyortyer was born into the renowned family of Mr. Timothy Yuwa (MON) from Benue State, Nigeria. She demonstrated hard work, intelligence and commitment from her early years in life starting from primary school; when she was chosen to tutor. lower classes even as a student herself. Her outstanding performance in Girls’ High School, Gindiri, Plateau State resulted in her coming out with a Division 1 and many other academic awards. Her leadership skills were harnessed as she was selected Class Captain, House Prefect, President of Fellowship of Christian Students and eventually became the Head Girl of the school. She also actively participated in various extracurricular activities such as Hockey, Volley Ball, Net Ball, Track and Field events and Drama in her Secondary School days.
Mrs. Iyortyer moved onto the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and graduated in 1979 with a BSc in Quantity Surveying (Second Class Upper Division) despite the fact she gave birth to her first child during her final examination period. She then proceeded to University College London (UCL), UK in 1983 where she obtained an MSc in Architecture (Building Economics and Management). She continually strived for self-development and obtained a Certificate in International Project Management (IPMA) in 2005 and a Certificate in Entrepreneurial Management from Pan Africa University, Lagos Business School in 2010. Furthermore, she has attended many national and international conferences dealing on a variety of interests spanning from professional to leadership, governance, financial management and business development. In her quest to acquire professional excellence, Mrs. Iyortyer has at various times earned memberships as Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Registered Quantity Surveyor, Member of Association of Project Management, Associate Member of Women in Management, Business and Public Service (WimBiz).
Mrs. Iyortyer’s working career spans over 36 years in both Public and Private sectors beginning as a Youth Corper at the Ministry of Works and Housing, Makurdi, Benue State in 1979 and was retained thereafter. She later transferred her services to the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and rose to the rank of an Assistant Chief Quantity Surveyor before retiring voluntarily in 1991 as a public servant to pursue her career in the private sector. She demonstrated entrepreneurship and business acumen by immediately establishing MTI Partnership (a Quantity Surveying and Project Management firm) and Zihabit Limited (a construction firm) both operating for over 24 years now. She also co-established and is presently co-managing Sinoni Limited (a hospitality outfit) for over 10 years with staff strength of over 100 people.
Madam has set records in many spheres of her life and can be rightly described as a “Woman of
History”. She was the first female Quantity Surveyor in the Northern Region of Nigeria, the first female chairperson of a chapter in NIQS (FCT Chapter), the Pioneer and Founding Chairperson of the Women Association of Quantity Surveyors (WAQSN), the first woman to represent the Institute on the Council of the African Association of Quantity Surveyors, a lady who was elected into the position of the Deputy President of the NIQS unopposed; this being the first time ever that such a position was contested as unopposed. Today again, she is making history as the first Female President of the
Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors after its 46 years of existence and 22 male Presidents. Over the years she was charged with various other professional leadership positions and responsibilities; a two time Board Member of the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria, served on the Council of Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) three times, Abuja liaison Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, treasurer and member of editorial board of the FCT Chapter, Exam Co-coordinator FCT Centre and Member Fellows Screening Panel.
Mrs. Iyortyer has over the years received several awards as a mark of recognition for her excellence and hard work. She was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Outstanding Woman Entrepreneur of the year by the University of Mkar, Benue State, Distinguished Woman Quantity Surveyors Award by the Federal University of Technology Students, Minna and Award for Meritorious Service by the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Abuja Chapter, QS Woman of the Year Award by Women Association of Quantity Surveyors of Nigeria. She has executed various high profile projects such as the Presidential Wing of the Abuja Airport as a participatory client, Benue State University Teaching Hospital and many other projects too numerous to mention.
