ABUJA, 05/11/2020 — The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) will unveil its new brand identity at the Institute’s 2020 Annual General Meeting scheduled to hold from 11th – 13th November in Minna, Niger State.

President of the Institute, QS Mohammed Abba Tor made the announcement at a Pre-AGM press conference at the Institute’s Head Office in Abuja.

QS Abba Tor explained that 50 years after the NIQS came into existence, major changes in the political, social, and technological environments has had tremendous impact on the Institute and Quantity Surveying profession in general.

“The NIQS embarked on this rebranding process in order to properly situate the Institute within the context of domestic and global changes to ensure it remains relevant to society and discharges its obligations to its members in the most effective ways,” Tor said.

“The role of the Quantity Surveyor in the construction industry as the professional construction costs manager and the unique value addition capability are sometimes overlooked. Some of the reasons can be attributed to low level of visibility of the profession when compared to other allied professions in the industry. Unfortunately, overlooking this input has negative effects ranging from costs overrun, challenges in procurement and mismatch between assumed project resourcing and actual requirements” he elaborated.

He added that the major themes dominating global focus are evolving towards the creation of a more sustainable and inclusive society for all. This has made it important for the NIQS to align strategically and be a channel through which these global goals are fed into the Nigerian context.

The next 50 years of the NIQS, according to the President of the Institute will be anchored on foundation that can be leveraged on by its members to the benefit of the wider society. This will start from implementing new value propositions that are relevant to its members and the society which are future fit.

In pursuit of these goals, the Rebranding Roadmap will be presented to members of the Institute and the general public in Minna on 12th November, 2020. Additionally, the refreshed visual brand elements, revised code of ethics and professional conduct as well as Quality Management Systems document that will guide the Institute in continuous improvement of its operations will be launched at the AGM.

Meanwhile, as part of its mission to train and produce world-class Quantity Surveyors and continuously enhance technical competency of members, the Institute will be holding a Pre-AGM Workshop on ‘Cost Management of Mechanical and Electrical Services in High-Rise Buildings’ on Thursday, 12th November, 2020 in Minna.

The workshop will be preceded by a technical site visit to Shiroro Hydro-electrical Power Station (Generation and Transmission Units) on Wednesday, 11th November, 2020.

The NIQS was founded in 1969 by a group of Nigerians who trained, qualified, and practiced in the United Kingdom but who upon returning to Nigeria sensed the need to develop the profession of Quantity Surveying in Nigeria by establishing a parallel body to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors of United Kingdom.

The Vision of the NIQS is “To be the profession in Nigeria responsible for total cost and procurement management, for the achievement of client’s objectives in all types of capital projects and developments, from conception to commissioning and maintenance, in all sectors of the economy, for the attainment of sustainable National development and goals.”
